Health & Vaccinations

Stay healthy and safe during your safari adventure

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever:

    Required if traveling from or transiting through endemic countries. Keep certificate with you.

  • COVID-19:

Malaria Prevention

Anti-Malarial Medication

Consult your doctor about appropriate anti-malarial medication at least 4-6 weeks before travel. Common options include Malarone, Doxycycline, or Mefloquine.

Avoid Bright Colors

Don't wear bright white, blue, or black clothing on game drives as they can scare wildlife or attract insects (especially tsetse flies).

Luggage Limit

If flying to remote camps, soft-sided bags are required with weight limits typically around 15kg (33lbs). Check with your tour operator.

Dry Season (June - September)

Peak Safari Season - Best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources.

Advantages:

  • Easier wildlife spotting with less vegetation
  • Better road conditions
  • Lower malaria risk

  • Higher prices and more tourists
  • Book well in advance

Wet Season (March - May)

Great Migration (Tanzania)

July - October: Witness millions of wildebeest crossing the Mara River in the Serengeti. Book 6-12 months in advance.

Gorilla Trekking (Uganda)

June - September & December - February: Drier months are ideal for trekking. Permits required and should be booked months ahead.

Bird Watching

November - April: Migratory birds from Europe arrive, making this prime time for birding enthusiasts across East Africa.

Calving Season (Tanzania)

January - February: Southern Serengeti sees massive calving with thousands of wildebeest births daily. Predator action peaks.

Bring clean, newer US dollar bills (2013 or later). Older or worn bills may not be accepted. $50 and $100 bills get better exchange rates.

Safety Guidelines

  • On Safari:

    Always stay in your vehicle during game drives. Keep windows up when near dangerous animals. Follow your guide's instructions.

  • In Cities:

    Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid walking alone at night. Use registered taxis or ride-sharing apps.

  • Food & Water:

    Drink bottled or purified water. Avoid ice in drinks. Eat at reputable restaurants and lodges.

  • Valuables:

    Use hotel safes for passports and valuables. Keep copies of important documents separately.

  • Emergency Numbers:

    Save local emergency contacts and your embassy information in your phone.

Cultural Respect

  • Greetings:

    Greet people warmly. A handshake is common. Use titles (Mr./Mrs.) when appropriate.

  • Dress Code:

    Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and religious sites. Cover shoulders and knees.

  • Photography:

    Always ask permission before photographing people. Some may request payment. Respect "no photography" signs.

  • Local Communities:

    Be respectful during village visits. Support local businesses. Don't give money or sweets to children.

  • Religious Sites:

    Remove shoes when entering mosques and some churches. Dress conservatively and speak quietly.

Keep Quiet

Speak softly to avoid disturbing animals and other guests. Use headphones for any devices.

Maintain Distance

Never approach wildlife on foot. Keep minimum safe distances as advised by your guide.

No Feeding

Never feed wild animals. It disrupts natural behavior and can be dangerous.

Be Patient

Wildlife moves on its own schedule. Patience is key for the best sightings.

Leave No Trace

Take all litter with you. Respect the environment and leave it as you found it.

No Flash

Avoid using camera flash on night drives as it can startle animals.
